How To Keep Your Lithium Systems When You Sell Your RV's

When David's travelling Australia and enjoying his fishing, he wants reliable power to run any appliance in his new Crusader Excalibur Caravan and a fridge / freezer in his tow vehicle. OK!

On arrival at the workshop, we inspected the caravan's existing system, which included three 170W Solar panels, an Enerdrive 2600W Inverter and two problematic 120Ah Lithium Batteries mounted in underslung cradles, external to the van.

When the batteries were discharged tested, we discovered one had only 85Ah's useable energy and the other 100Ah. In addition to lacking power, the inequality of power was convincing the Battery's Control Unit to shut them down, so David was experiencing inconvenient, intermittent power loss.

So David can run appliances such as a coffee machine and the air conditioner for short periods, we designed and built a compact 'plug and play' 300Ah RV Lithium System which is completely portable if David chooses to change caravans in the future and keep the system.

Tucked securely inside the van, the 300Ah RV Lithium Systems Battery / Inverter / Charger Pack, weighing a total of 60kgs, includes:

  • Custom built 300Ah RV Lithium (LiFePO4) Battery with Cell Balancing and Cell Protection

  • Built-in 3000VA Victron Multiplus II Inverter / Charger which features a 120A, 240V Charger.

  • A Victron VE.BUS Bluetooth Dongle which gives the Multiplus II Bluetooth capabilities. This dongle also links the solar controllers for synchronised charging and sends the controllers accurate battery voltage and temperature information.

  • A Victron BMV712 Battery Monitor Shunt which connects via a data cable to the Battery Monitor which is conveniently mounted elsewhere in the van.

We also added:

  • A 175W & 115W Solar panel to bump up the solar to a total of 800W on the roof, through a Victron 50A Smart Solar Bluetooth MPPT Solar Controller.

  • A Victron Smart Solar 30A MPPT Solar controller for David's KT300W Portable Solar Blanket, along with a convenient external Anderson plug mounted to the van to plug it in to.

  • An RVLSA 600W DCDC link to run through the 30A Solar controller for vehicle charging whilst driving. Both Solar controllers are linked for synchronised charging.

As mentioned, David's a keen fisherman and we think he might be partial to a cold beverage, so he was also looking to power a 60L ARB Fridge in the tow vehicle as a fridge or freezer for that bumper catch, plus charge a few accessories.

We fitted the most compact model of The Lithium Box to David's 100 Series Turbo Diesel Landcruiser. Like the caravans' system, The Lithium Box is completely transferable to another vehicle. The Lithium Box 100/40 Small features:

  • 100Ah RV Lithium Systems Lithium (LiFePO4) Battery with Cell Balancing and Cell Protection

  • Victron Smart Shunt Bluetooth Battery Meter. Read the battery meter from the convenience of your smart phone. Displays the battery’s voltage, amps in or out, amp hours consumed, time to go until flat, and actual State of Charge (SOC) as a percentage.

  • Master Battery Switch

  • Automatic 65A Low Battery State of Charge or Voltage Disconnect of accessory power sockets and Automatic Reconnect once the battery has received adequate charge

  • Internal Fusing and Output Short Circuit Protection

  • REDARC BCDC 1240D Vehicle 40A DC to DC Charger with Blue 50A Anderson Plug Input, protected by cell protection and 40A MPPT Solar Charger with Red 50A Anderson Plug Input protected by cell protection

  • 1 x 50A (max) Grey Anderson Plug Output

  • 1 x 50A Grey Anderson Plug Output 15A (Max) suitable for Fridge Socket

  • 2 x Accessory (Cig) Sockets

  • 1 x Waeco/Engel Socket

  • A Victron Energy 240V IP65 Battery Charger connection for optional 240 volt charging

  • (5 to 15A max).

  • A Smart Alternator Ignition Wire Input or Loop Connection.

  • Weighs in at only 15kgs Measures 315 x 155 x 275mmH (add 30mm to length for mounting foot)
